Supplies (suggested, but not limited to): a notebook, a computer with the equivalent of Microsoft Word and Powerpoint, access to a printer, access to the internet, a gmail account, access to the class blog, google documents, and a prezi account

Course Description:

HS American Literature Regular encompasses a correlated study of listening, speaking, discussion, presentation, language development, reading, critical thinking, and composition. This course will survey selected works of literature representing American literature beginning with the earliest literature and progress to “modern-day” literature. The novels and accompanying selections from the textbook will address the idea of “The American Dream.” In addition to evaluating the works, students use them as the inspiration for their own writing and interpretive projects.

Course Objectives:

The broad learning objectives are adapted from the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards of the United States. For the complete standards, please refer to http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/english-language-arts-standards/reading-literature-6-12/grade-11-12/. After this course, students should be able to:

ñ Determine the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases.

ñ Demonstrate knowledge of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

ñ Read for key ideas and details, so as to be able to cite evidence from a text to support an analysis, identify central themes and ideas of a text, and analyze an author's choices in a text.

ñ Read for craft and structure, so as to be able to determine the literal and figurative meaning of a text, identify how an author's choice of structure impacts the text, and to determine how the point of view affects how a text is meant to be read.

ñ Read for integration of knowledge and ideas, so as to be able to analyze multiple interpretations of the same text and demonstrate knowledge of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same time period treat similar topics.

ñ Initiate and participate in a range of collaborative discussions.

ñ Present information with a clear and distinct perspective, making strategic use of digital media.

ñ Produce clear and coherent writing.

In addition, it is my hope that after this course, students will love literature, be critical thinkers in all areas, understand and encompass literacy, be able to communicate effectively, and be good citizens.

Course Requirements:

Students will be expected to come to class on time for every class and to participate fully, which includes but is not limited to coming prepared, staying awake, speaking only English, taking notes, answering questions, thinking, contributing to discussion, and completing class assignments.
Students must complete assigned tasks on time. Assignments will not be counted as complete unless the student's first and last name are clearly visible. Late homework will be self-graded and count for half the points. Quizzes and tests can only be made up under extenuating circumstances. Essays received late will lose one letter grade per calendar day after the due date and will not be accepted five calendar days after the due date.
Students must be able to work independently and in cooperative groups to complete assigned tasks.
Oral participation and writing assignments will be done on a regular basis.
Students are responsible for compiling a portfolio to be used for parent conferences.
Academic dishonesty (cheating of any kind, but especially plagiarism) will result in a grade of 0 for the section of the assignment the first time, a grade of 0 for the entire assignment the second time, and a failing grade for the quarter the third time.

Major assignments: This is not all of the assignments students will be doing; this is just a sample of the Major Assignments. There will be many different assignments graded throughout the course done in class and as homework. Due dates will be determined as assignment is given.

ñ An on-going, cumulative portfolio

Evaluation: The grading system will be based on content specific writing components, reading selections, quizzes, exams, completed assignments, essays, projects, and class participation. A final grade will be given based on the percent average of the previous and according to the countywide grades scale.

A+ = 97-100 A = 93-96 A- = 90-92

B+ = 87-89 B = 83-87 B- = 80-82

C+ = 77-79 C = 73-76 C- = 70-72

D+ = 67-69 D = 63-66 D- = 60-62

F = 60 and below

Class Grading; Semester Grade is based on a scale of 100% (category percentages are approximate)

Papers = 20% of the total grade

Projects = 20% of the total grade

Exams = 20% of the total grade

Quizzes = 12% of the total grade

Discussion = 10% of the total grade

Homework = 5% of the total grade

Participation = 5% of the total grade

Notes = 4% of the total grade

Portfolio = 4% of the total grade

TOTAL = 100%

ñ Extra Credit: Students will be given extra credit opportunities (projects, critiques) during the term.

ñ It is recommended that you record the names, phone numbers, and email of at least two other classmates to form a study group. It is the student's responsibility to be informed of class assignments.
